Correct answer: C

  1. Write the growth law

If bacterial growth is analogous to radioactive decay in form, then instead of decreasing exponentially, it increases exponentially: N=N0ekt ,k>0N = N_0 e^{kt} \, , \quad k>0N=N0ekt,k>0

  2. Take logarithm

    Taking natural log on both sides: ln⁡N=ln⁡N0+kt\ln N = \ln N_0 + ktlnN=lnN0+kt

Rearranging in terms of the ratio: ln⁡(NN0)=kt\ln\left(\frac{N}{N_0}\right)=ktln(N0N)=kt

  3. Interpret the graph

    This means:

    • NNN vs ttt is an exponential increasing curve.
    • ln⁡N\ln NlnN vs ttt is a straight line with positive slope.
    • ln⁡(N/N0)\ln(N/N_0)ln(N/N0) vs ttt is also a straight line through the origin.
  4. Compare with radioactive decay

    For decay: N=N0e−λtN = N_0 e^{-\lambda t}N=N0e−λt so ln⁡(N0N)=λt\ln\left(\frac{N_0}{N}\right)=\lambda tln(NN0)=λt is linear.

    For growth: N=N0ektN = N_0 e^{kt}N=N0ekt so ln⁡(NN0)=kt\ln\left(\frac{N}{N_0}\right)=ktln(N0N)=kt is linear.

  5. Choose the correct option

Therefore, the correct graph must represent a straight line for ln⁡(N/N0)\ln(N/N_0)ln(N/N0) vs ttt (or equivalently an exponentially increasing NNN vs ttt). Among the given options, this corresponds to Option C.
