In chromatography, which of the following statements is incorrect for Rf ?
  1. A
Rf value depends on the type of chromatography.
  2. B
Higher Rf value means higher adsorption.
  3. C
Rf value is dependent on the mobile phase.
  4. D
The value of Rf can not be more than one.

Correct answer: B

  1. Recall the definition of RfR_fRf

In chromatography (especially paper/TLC), the retention factor is defined as

Rf=distance travelled by the solute (spot)distance travelled by the solvent frontR_f = \frac{\text{distance travelled by the solute (spot)}}{\text{distance travelled by the solvent front}}Rf=distance travelled by the solvent frontdistance travelled by the solute (spot)

Since the spot cannot travel farther than the solvent front,

0≤Rf≤10 \le R_f \le 10≤Rf≤1

So RfR_fRf cannot be more than 1.

  1. Check each statement

Option A: "RfR_fRf value depends on the type of chromatography."

This is correct. Different chromatographic methods and stationary phases can change how far a substance moves, so RfR_fRf depends on the chromatography setup.

Option B: "Higher RfR_fRf value means higher adsorption."

This is incorrect. If a substance is more strongly adsorbed on the stationary phase, it moves less and hence has a lower RfR_fRf value. Therefore, higher RfR_fRf means lower adsorption (or greater affinity for the mobile phase).

Option C: "RfR_fRf value is dependent on the mobile phase."

This is correct. Changing the solvent/mobile phase changes how far the compound travels, so RfR_fRf changes.

Option D: "The value of RfR_fRf cannot be more than one."

This is correct by definition since the solute cannot move beyond the solvent front.

  1. Conclusion

The incorrect statement is:

B\boxed{\text{B}}B
