Correct answer: 3

We need to count compounds which satisfy both:

  1. Red colouration with ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN)
  2. Positive iodoform test

1. What does ceric ammonium nitrate test indicate?

Ceric ammonium nitrate gives a red colouration with alcohols.

So the compound must contain an alcoholic −OH-OH−OH group.

2. What does iodoform test indicate?

Iodoform test is given by compounds containing either:

  • a methyl ketone group: RCOCH3RCOCH_3RCOCH3
  • or an alcohol of type: CH3CH(OH)RCH_3CH(OH)RCH3CH(OH)R
  • ethanol also gives the test because it gets oxidized to ethanal.

Since the compound must also give CAN test, we focus on alcohols that give iodoform test.

Thus the required alcohols are of type CH3CH(OH)RCH_3CH(OH)RCH3CH(OH)R and also CH3CH2OHCH_3CH_2OHCH3CH2OH

3. Common compounds satisfying both tests

Among standard compounds in this chapter, the alcohols that satisfy both are:

  1. Ethanol: CH3CH2OHCH_3CH_2OHCH3CH2OH

    • CAN: positive
    • Iodoform: positive
  2. 2-Propanol: CH3CH(OH)CH3CH_3CH(OH)CH_3CH3CH(OH)CH3

    • CAN: positive
    • Iodoform: positive
  3. 2-Butanol: CH3CH(OH)CH2CH3CH_3CH(OH)CH_2CH_3CH3CH(OH)CH2CH3

    • CAN: positive
    • Iodoform: positive

Hence, the number of such compounds is 333

4. Final answer

The required number of compounds is 3\boxed{3}3

5. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = 333

Our derived answer also = 333. So they agree.
