JEE MainChemistryAlcohols Phenols and EthersMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement I : o-Nitrophenol is steam volatile due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Statement II : o-Nitrophenol has high melting due to hydrogen bonding. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. B
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  3. C
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Correct answer: B

  1. Analyze Statement I

Statement I says: ooo-Nitrophenol is steam volatile due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding.

    • In ooo-nitrophenol, the −OH-OH−OH group and −NO2-NO_2−NO2 group are adjacent, so intramolecular hydrogen bonding occurs.
    • Because of this, molecules of ooo-nitrophenol are less associated with each other.
    • Lower intermolecular association means lower boiling tendency relative to the para isomer, so it becomes steam volatile.

    Therefore, Statement I is true.

  2. Analyze Statement II

Statement II says: ooo-Nitrophenol has high melting due to hydrogen bonding.

    • High melting point generally results from strong intermolecular forces and better crystal packing.
    • But in ooo-nitrophenol, hydrogen bonding is intramolecular, not intermolecular.
    • Intramolecular hydrogen bonding actually reduces intermolecular attraction and gives poorer crystal association.
    • Hence, ooo-nitrophenol does not have high melting point due to hydrogen bonding.
    • In fact, ppp-nitrophenol has stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonding and therefore higher melting point.

    Therefore, Statement II is false.

  3. Choose the correct option

    • Statement I: True
    • Statement II: False

    So the correct option is:

    B\boxed{\text{B}}B

  4. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer = B

    Our derived answer = B

    Hence, they agree.
