The figure shows surface XY separating two transparent media, medium -1 and medium -2 . The lines ab and cd represent wavefronts of a light wave traveling in medium -1 and incident on X Y. The lines ef and gh represent wavefronts of the light wave in medium -2 after refraction. IIT-JEE 2007 Paper 2 Offline Physics - Geometrical Optics Question 11 English ComprehensionLight travels as a

Correct answer: A

  1. Key idea: relation between wavefronts and rays

Rays are always perpendicular to wavefronts.

    • If successive wavefronts are parallel and equally shaped, the rays are parallel, so the beam is a parallel beam.
    • If wavefronts are curved and getting closer toward a point, the beam is convergent.
    • If wavefronts are curved and spreading from a point, the beam is divergent.
  2. Observation in medium-1

The incident wavefronts are represented by lines ababab and cdcdcd.

These are shown as straight, parallel lines. Therefore, the normals to them (the rays) are also parallel.

Hence, in medium-1, light travels as a parallel beam.

  3. Observation in medium-2

The refracted wavefronts are represented by lines efefef and ghghgh.

These are also shown as straight, parallel lines. Therefore, the refracted rays, being perpendicular to these wavefronts, are also parallel.

Hence, in medium-2 also, light travels as a parallel beam.

  4. Conclusion

Since the wavefronts are plane in both media, light travels as a plane wave in both media, i.e. as a parallel beam in each medium.

  5. Checking options

    • A: parallel beam in each medium ✅
    • B: convergent beam in each medium ❌
    • C: divergent beam in each medium ❌
    • D: divergent in one and convergent in the other ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is A.
